Yasutaka Nakata And Yonezu Kenshi Collaborate On “NANIMONO”

In some sad news for all

BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and J-rock fans everywhere, the group's lead singer

Michiyuki Kawashima has passed away at the age of 47 after a long battle with a brain tumour.

In a new post on the official BOOM BOOM SATELLITES Facebook page, it was revealed that Kawashima passed away on

October 9 and a wake and funeral will be held privately for family and close friends. As for all the fans who have supported the group over the years, a farewell event is planned, though a date has not been revealed yet.

The remaining BOOM BOOM SATELLITES member

Masayuki Nakano also posted up his own thoughts on Kawashima's passing before expressing his gratitude to all their fans:

At 5:12am on October 9th, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES's vocalist Michiyuki Kawashima set off on the next stage of his journey.

I imagine he is soaring around the world, finally freed from the restrictions of his body. His passing is not a tragedy, but the achievement of a lifetime goal and a happy ending. The love of our many fans supported Michiyuki Kawashima and BOOM BOOM SATELLITES on their journey, and we are truly happy and lucky because of you.

On behalf of Michiyuki Kawashima, I would like to thank all our fans and colleagues again.

"Thank you for supporting us up until now. Live your lives with passion and energy and keep the music we made, the time we spent together, and the memories we shared close to you."

“One more thing, we are BOOM BOOM SATELLITES!!”

Masayuki Nakano

Kawashima was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012, and he has experienced numerous relapses during his four-year fight. Following another relapse in 2014, it was announced in

June this year that the group's EP "

Lay Your Hands On Me" would be the group's final release due to Kawashima's failing health.

Our condolences go out to Masayuki Nakano, and the friends and family of Michiyuki Kawashima.
